Getter Robo: Armageddon Complete Anime Review

I will have to say upfront that I love Go Nagai's work, so this review will not be completely unbiased. Go Nagai is one of the reasons I fell in love with science fiction in general. Who else could have possibly brought us Mazinger Z or Cutey Honey, Devil Lady. To this very day I still wish my fists could shoot off like rockets and knock the block off of that annoying person who is always complaining at my co-ops board meetings.

This series has everything, Violence, Mayhem, and Chaos. Let's not forget really big robots. No, I meant to say enormous ROBOTS.

Here's the premise:

The Getter Robos were created to defend the planet from all that would threaten it. But the massive robot weapons were so powerful; those they protected began to fear them. A fear so great it drove humanity to destroy its saviors and their creator. But now a shadow has crept across the moon. The faint echoes of evil laughter can be heard. Terrified whispers tell of the Invaders. Mankind now cowers under the watchful eye of an extraterrestrial menace beyond their nightmares. Their only defenses are the Getter Robos, and the only man who can bring them back lies rotting in the Earth. Or does he?

This 12 episodes series is cool, all the characters are these gruff disgruntled, bad asses that are common in the Go Nagai universe, It's the kind of attitude that if you were surrounded by hordes of thousands of mutated space aliens all bent on ripping you to shreds, you would say (nonchalantly) "Ah, what the f**k, I didn't have anything planned for today anyway."

The robots transform and divide into multiple components ala Voltron. The transforming aspect is based on the getter rays that accelerate evolution, whether it's biological or mechanical. The aliens are shape-shifting mutanoid creatures from the Oort cloud. This show has everything from Time travel, Cosmic Wormholes, Genetic Engineering, mile high roving fortresses, Armies of robots and aliens, global annihilation, oh yeah and there's a story too.

Freakin cool Anime!
