Casshan Robot Hunter DVD Review
Overview
Enslaved by an army of rebellious super-robots originally designed to help civilization avert a complete ecological cataclysm, mankind's only hope is CASSHAN, a legendary hero who wages a solitary war to defeat these NEOROIDS and restore the Earth to its rightful order. Ironically, Casshan's father is the same scientist who engineered the race of super androids now threatening to destroy all of mankind. On a crusade to clear the name of his father, Casshan must sacrifice his own humanity in order to attain the powers he needs to defeat mankind's powerful enemies. But Casshan's power does not come without a price. Haunted by the memories of his murdered mother and forced to deal with a super robot that has absorbed, and now manipulates, the consciousness of his father, Casshan must put aside his own emotions and fight to preserve the survival of the human race. An extraordinary tale of science fantasy and social relevance, CASSHAN is a story of man's best-laid plans paving the way to potential destruction. Animation is filled with bold action, pure adventure and remarkable depth.
Review
Yeah, I know, if you've read all of my reviews you're gonna say "What the f**k does this guy ever dislike anything?" Well yes, I dislike a ton of stuff, but I'm always trying to find the good in everything, not necessarily the bad. Also I try not to watch things that I think are going suck in the first place, just like everyone else; I have a life so my time is precious. So on that note...
Casshan is fun to watch and it's the source for a lot of other great movie and anime's as well. First off it gets great respect because it comes from the same studio that brought us Speed Racer and Ninja Team Gatchaman or better known as G-Force. This is like time traveling to when Japanese cartoons were still mysterious and you could only catch them really early in the mornings.
Casshan is the story of where an attempt to save the world goes haywire and actually gets screwed up, just as in the Will Smith movie I, Robot. The Neoroids that are built misinterpret the reason for their existence and decide to wipe out the human race. But the hero is the son of the scientist who created the Neoroids and in his attempt to right his error creates the Casshan Combat Android. So the son transmutes his body directly into Casshan; fusing organic and inorganic and becomes something beyond we can imagine.
Totally cool powers (he can punch through metal) and the suit just has that slick retro look that you always envisioned the future to look like. Casshan also gets his powers from solar energy and has to make sure he doesn't fight in bad weather, does this remind you of the Matrix or what?
The coolness factor in the Casshan story is so strong they made a live action movie called Casshern, read the synopsis directly below.
Casshern The Motion Picture
An alternate world with an alternate history. The entire planet was divided between two opposing alliances. After fifty years of bitter warfare, the Greater Eastern Federation triumphs over the forces of Europa and gains dominion over the Eurasian continent.
However, this is an empty victory. Years of chemical, biological and nuclear war have poisoned the land and left an exhausted population at the mercy of every pestilence and newly-mutated disease.
It seems that there's little hope for humanity's future. Debate rages over the chances of finding some way to stave off the seemingly-inevitable decline of civilization.
One man comes forward with a possible solution. Dr. Azuma is a geneticist who proposes a "neo-cell" treatment that can rejuvenate the body and regenerate humankind. He's driven in his studies by a desire to save his beloved wife, Midori, from the ravages of pollution-related disease.
He appeals for funding to the government but the politicians in the Health Ministry turn him down, fearing that the new technology will threaten their entrenched powers. However, a sinister faction in the powerful military makes a secret offer to provide the support he needs to further his research.
When an incident occurs in the lab that sends the Professor's "neo-cell" cloning experiment haywire, a race of mutant human beings (Shinzo Ningen) is unleashed upon the world. Instead of being the savior of mankind, the Professor's miraculous technology looks set to threaten its very existence...
I can't wait to see this in the theatres, if you interested in seeing the trailer click here.
